Most Requested Famous Poems
Some of my most requested famous poems are ones that I remember, and so they MUST be old! (LOL).
These poems are famous because they touch the heart of so many people. It doesn't matter where they live, their age, or anything else about them. It shows that we as humans, all want love, appreciate friendship, and love the environment.
I know that one poem in particular, "The Peace of Wild Things" by Wendell Berry has become a very famous poem for people stressed out about what is happening in the world right now. It is a comforting poem. These pieces are all prints that can be personalized by adding "to, from" etc. That makes them less costly than having an original done for a first time. If any of the poems you see on the site appeal to you, just write to me. If I still have the original I can have them done for you at a big savings!
The Famous Poem: Desiderata
Desiderata is one of my most popular requests as well. I have the text superimposed on many different backgrounds that my customers have requested. It's a VERY long poem that gives you directions about how to live your life. I think if a person could follow all of Max Ehrmann's directions they would end up happy, successful and probably healthy as well!
Because I have the text already written, if you would like a copy of Desiderata with a different background, it too will be very much more affordable than having to write it all out again! You can contact me if you want your own background with Desiderata.
In a cute story, a father did his own modifications of the text of Desiderata as a wedding gift for his daughter and new son-in-law.
Reciting Famous Poems
Memorizing famous poems was something I had to do back in elementary school. It was a long time ago, in my childhood when my mother would recite famous poems to me. She did it so well, with a great cadence and emotion. Sea Fever is one that I can remember her reciting:
"I must go down to the sea again, to the lonely sea and the sky"
I had almost forgotten about it until a new customer ALSO loved the poem. I was delighted when he asked for me to do a calligraphy piece using this famous poem because I got to remember it again!
My Favorite Poem
My favorite poem comes from a book of poems written by a Lebanese spiritual writer and poet: Kahlil Gibran. I cannot read many of his poems without tearing up from emotion. They are so profound and touch a place in my heart. I cannot encourage you enough to get his book: The Prophet so that you can read ALL of his poems!
The Prophet On Children
Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.
You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.
You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer’s hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable.
From The Prophet (Knopf, 1923).
"The Prophet on Children" is so moving. I hope you think that my calligraphy does it justice! I defy you not to be utterly moved when you read this famous poem! As you can see, I use this poem as a baby gift along with the name and photo of the new arrival. I can add siblings names as well. And as in the case of the other calligraphy pieces I've already written, this is more affordable because The Prophet on Children is already written out.
Famous Poems About Courage
These two famous poems, "Invictus" and "If" speak to a life lived with courage. I'm a tennis addict - actually fanatic! Every year when tennis players entire center court for the competition at Wimbledon Stadium in England they pass under these lines from "If" by Rudyard Kipling:
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same
Invictus is a famous poem perfect for the soldier in your life:
I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul
